ISO 9001 (Quality Management Systems) is a critical concept in quality, health, safety, and environmental management.

What Is ISO 9001?

ISO 9001:2015 is the international standard for quality management systems published by the International Organization for Standardization. Over 1.1 million organisations in 189 countries hold certification. It provides a framework based on 7 quality management principles: customer focus, leadership, engagement of people, process approach, improvement, evidence-based decision making, and relationship management. The standard uses the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle and requires organisations to identify risks and opportunities, set quality objectives, control documented information, and conduct internal audits.

ISO 9001 Requirements Under UK Law

Not legally mandatory in the UK but effectively required for government supply chains (Crown Commercial Service), defence procurement (MoD), aerospace (AS9100 basis), automotive (IATF 16949 basis), and healthcare supply. UKAS accredits certification bodies. Surveillance audits occur annually with full recertification every 3 years. Non-compliance can result in loss of certification, loss of contracts worth £millions, and reputational damage. The standard has 10 clauses based on Annex SL High-Level Structure.
